I've mentioned the "subject" a few times already, because with out a subject and verb, you don't have a complete sentence. they are considered the "building blocks" of the sentence.
Examples:
~ The elephant drove the car.
~ The thunder ended the baseball game.
~ The fog rolled into the cemetery.
Explanations:
~ elephant is the subject, drove is the verb
~ Thunder is the subject, ended is the verb
~ Fog is the subject, rolled is the verb
each subject in the sentences are what the sentence is based off of, the verb supports the subject
